In August and September I got swept up in the Red Sox playoff hunt and started watching games on the computer fairly often. Sophie liked to sit with me and she learned to sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," and most of the players' names. She was especially fond of Big Papi. I wanted Sophie to get to see him before he retired.
I got a crazy idea in my head and went with it. I booked Amtrak tickets and bought a ticket to the final Red Sox/Yankees series at Fenway Park. Sophie and I took the overnight train on Friday night. We rolled into the Back Bay Station around eight in the morning and walked down Newbury Street to Kenmore Square where we had breakfast.
We had a few hours to kill so we walked around the park, bought Sophie an Ortiz jersey and a hat, and hung out talking with a nice couple who loved Sophie at the Boston Beer Works.
The game was great. It was close, but the Red Sox won. Sophie didn't catch much of the action on the field, but she ate up the atmosphere, and was a big hit with the other fans in our section.
On Saturday night we stayed at my parent's small apartment in Alston and the next morning we had breakfast at a little diner where Sophie turned the creamers into building blocks.
It was another great adventure with Sophie Lee. Next time I will remember to bring her hair brush.
